Call Longbranch Dental Center at (903) 455-4161 as early in the day as you can; we see most emergency patients the same day. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, keep it moist in milk and try to get here within an hour. For swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, heavy bleeding that will not stop, or a jaw injury from a serious accident, call 911 or go to the emergency room.
What to do until you get here.
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm salt water, floss gently around the tooth and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed. Do not put aspirin on the gum. Call us; pain usually means infection or a deep cavity.
Knocked-out tooth
Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently if dirty, try to set it back in the socket, or keep it in milk. A tooth saved within an hour has the best chance.
Broken or cracked tooth
Rinse your mouth, save any pieces and use a cold compress for swelling. Avoid chewing on that side until we see you.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the crown in a bag and bring it. A dab of denture adhesive or dental cement from the pharmacy can cover the tooth for a day. We can often re-cement the crown.
Swelling or abscess
A swollen face or gum, a pimple on the gum or a bad taste can mean infection. Call right away. If swelling spreads to your eye, neck or throat, go to the ER.
Broken denture
Do not glue it. Our on-site lab finishes most denture repairs the same day, some in about an hour. Same-day denture repair →
Some emergencies need a hospital, not a dentist.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow, bleeding that will not stop after 15 minutes of firm pressure, a possible broken jaw, or any head injury. Once you are stable, we can treat the teeth.
What happens when you call.
Call us early
Call (903) 455-4161. Tell us what happened and how long it has hurt. We hold time each day for emergencies and will give you the first opening we have.
Same day, in most casesExam and X-ray
A dentist examines the area and takes a digital X-ray to find the cause, not just the symptom.
Relief first
We numb the area and take care of the pain: draining an infection, smoothing a broken edge, placing a temporary filling or re-cementing a crown.
A plan and a price
If you need more treatment, such as a root canal, crown or extraction, we explain your options and give you the fee before anything is done.
Follow-up
Some problems are fixed in one visit. Others get a follow-up appointment to finish the work, often within the week.

What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?

Is a toothache an emergency?
A toothache that keeps you up at night, throbs, or comes with swelling or fever needs to be seen quickly. It usually means infection or a deep cavity, and it rarely goes away on its own.
What if my face is swollen?
Call us right away. Facial swelling usually means an infection that needs treatment. If the swelling affects your breathing, swallowing or vision, or spreads down your neck, go to the emergency room first.
Are you open on Fridays or weekends?
Our office is closed Friday through Sunday. If you have a serious problem when we are closed, such as swelling that affects breathing or bleeding that will not stop, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
